Sydney Machado
Sydney Ferreira Machado Junior is a mixed martial arts athlete from Brazil.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, he began his path in Jiu Jitsu at an early age in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, where he would take his first steps as a white belt under the guidance of his Master, Alexandre Soca Freítas, now a renowned Coral Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. From the very beginning with Master Soca, Sydney showed a strong desire to dedicate himself to competitive Jiu Jitsu. With his teacher’s mentorship, he earned a scholarship at the academy and began building a decorated competitive career.
During his time as a blue belt, Sydney won numerous competitions, achieving multiple gold medals in recognized events such as the Union Cup, Helio Gracie Cup, and Teresópolis. He also reached the IBJJF podium several times, earning two silver medals and one bronze in 1998 and 1999.
As a purple belt, his success continued, capturing titles including Champion of Brazil in 2001 and Champion of the Rio de Janeiro Selectiva for the 2001 World Cup.
He received his brown belt in 2002, though injuries limited his competition that year. By 2003 he returned strong, becoming Brazil Champion, State Champion of Paraná, and Bronze Medalist in the Brazilian Nationals.
In 2004, Sydney competed in the IBJJF Jiu Jitsu World Cup, where he won the silver medal in middle heavyweight, earning his long-awaited black belt that same year. Soon after, he was invited to fight in ADCC Brazil and went on to win the Porto Alegre State Championship.
Today, Sydney continues to compete at the highest levels, most recently at the Masters Worlds in Las Vegas in 2024, reaffirming his dedication to the sport and to representing his lineage under Alexandre Soca.
About Alexandre Soca Freítas: Alexandre Soca is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Coral Belt, ADCC veteran, and one of the most respected instructors in the world. Known for his technical precision and competitive achievements, he has trained and produced multiple champions, carrying forward the rich legacy of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
